VAT number and W-8BEN tax information

Hello,

If I am a UK citizen without a business do I still need to enter a VAT number and W-8BEN tax information? I don't know what that information is and don't think I have it.

VAT number: No, but Upwork will charge you VAT on the service fee and connects you buy

W-8BEN: Yes. You just complete the online form. For "name of business" just use your legal name.

If you're going to freelance via Upwork, you do indeed have a business and need to register as a sole trader with HMRC.
