Ok - I followed this community post - want that first job? I crafted carefully my profile. Uploaded a professional photo. took some tests. Uploaded what I thought was a great porfolio. I've set my hourly rate what I hoped was reasonable. The only thing I have not done is my video. Why? Honestly - I am deaf. Although I speak very well - but it is evident when I speak that there is a slight impediment. I have submitted many , many proposals and still no job. I have been approached by one scammer - was savvy enough to recognize it as such.
I am at a loss. Do I need to do a video?

Christine, I don't have a video and I don't know if it would be beneficial or not. What you need, however, more than a video, is to redo your profile from scratch.
You cannot succeed here being a jack of all trades. You need to specialize. Seriously. Pick one industry, something you're good at, possibly a niche, and market yourself as a specialist in this industry.
You can provide services that are really close, but not completely different.

Start out with a tightly focused profile. After you have completed some jobs successfully, you can slowly expand if you really want to.
But specialists have more earning potential than generalists.
I have re-written my profile based a narrower focus.I have decided that I would pursue wordpress projects for small businesses and not for profits for now. I also believe my hourly rate is reasonable and my porfolio is reflective of my scope.
Let's go! 🙂
I would like to reach out to those who are starting their businesses and they need a website. Am I limiting myself that way? I also enjoy working with not for profits with their websites.
Limiting is a good thing.
A client can see your profile and see that you're the freelancer they're looking for.
You can still apply to any job you want.
And you can change your profile overview text any time you want. There is no limit to how often you change it.
I had exactly same degree of frustration when I started on this platform. I am sharing this with you beacuse I felt this will help you to be patient in these trying times and give you courage to move forward till you get a first order.
However to get started initially you can focus on three or four areas and look for the opportunities in these areas.
I am sure you will get an opportunity some day as I did and the avenues will open for you slowly.
You may have to work with never give up attitude till you get a first breakthrough. Upwork constantly shows us what our next milestone is, as your milestone changes, kindly change you goal field and re-orient yourself to attain that milestone.
Just an additional information, my profile was only 75% complete when I got my order. Today I have 100% complete profile and No video as yet. It is totally individual choice.
If you need any help from myside, I will be happy to help you.
