Any payment you receive has a service fee.

You pay a 20% fee on the first $ 500 you earn from any one client
After that you pay a 10% fee on any money you earn from that same client, until you have earned $ 10.000 from them.
After $ 10.000 earned from one client the fee drops to 5%

The good news is this:
If the client decided to pay you a $100 bonus...
and if Upwork collected a $20 fee from that...
It means you have received $80 that you weren't expecting...
...in essentially free money!

re: " minus the income taxes you have to pay in your country."
That may be true, but Upwork had nothing to do with levying those taxes on anybody.
