Maybe that is the most important thing to take away from this: Always, ALWAYS trust your gut. If your gut sends out warning signs while you are interviewing the client - just walk away.
I understand the urge to accept contracts and all that, but life is too short for bad clients and the stress they cause.....

There is a middle ground.
There are many clients who do not understand the fixed-price contract model.
But it is perfectly safe to work with them using an hourly contract.
The hourly contract model at Upwork is quite safe to use for freelancers. If you have an hourly contract and use use consistently, you don't need to worry about scope creep or clients asking you to work for free.
