hi everyone im new to Upwork, my first contract was to do 20 images retouching and ive now completed 26.

6 to many 

should i request payment for the 20 and then propose a new milestone?

what would you do in this situation?

If you were only asked to do 20 images, then why did you do 26? I wouldn't ask a client to pay me for work that they didn't request.

So it's hourly. No need to request anything.

So your client actually said that they want you to retouch images for one month? Because your initial post said that you were told to retouch 20 images and that you had done 6 too many. Or maybe they just set a first milestone for 20 pictures? In that case, yes, you can ask the client to approve the first milestone and set up a new one IF they want you to continue, but they're not obliged to keep working with you for a month; you should never make assumptions or do anything that hasn't been discussed and funded first.
