second contract possible?

My client seems to want to keep the contract open although there isn't any work from her right now. I have two questions: one, can I still get paid even though the contract isn't closed yet? And, two, can I still look for other work and open a second contract? Can we have several contracts ongoing at the same time? Thanks

You're a freelancer. You can have as many contracts with as many clients at any given time as you can handle.
