IMO you should know all of the scams that occur here.  Click on this link https://community.upwork.com/t5/New-to-Upwork/Tips-to-Avoid-Questionable-Jobs/td-p/240833

Also search these forums for scams, you'll find at least one, if not more freelancer posting each day about how they got scammed or some other information concerning scam jobs.

Short list - any invitations you get that you didn't apply for are scams. Mention of Google hangouts. offering payment off site (send you a check, or deposit into your paypal account) Asking for payment for country work tax, job registrations, computers/laptops, payment for anything. Asking for personal info, passport, bank, credit card, auto tags, SS #, mothers maiden name, address (unless they are mailing material that is relevant to the job (such as business cards to be inputted into a spreadsheet.) and asking for mockups, samples relevant to what they need, tests (unless you are paid for any of them)

Make sure, for hourly and fixed rate jobs, that the clients account is verified BEFORE you start working and additionally, for fixed rate jobs, make sure escrow is FULLY and I repeat FULLY funded either for the entire job or for each milestone as they come up BEFORE you start work, no matter what the client says or promises you.

All above are scams.
