Direct contract

I tried to login into my account today to send someone who wanted to give me a job outside upwork a direct contract proposal, but to my disappointment I notice Direct contract is not functioning on my account again? What could be the cause?

Could it be that the upgrade/maintenance that upwork team want to carry out is the reason it's not functional, or the feature has been axed from my account.

Please I need a quick response.

Thanks

Hi Constantin,

I would like to clarify that the process you're referring to is working as designed.

With Direct Contracts, you can create and send contract proposals to your clients that don't have Upwork accounts. Your client will be asked to create an Upwork account. Just like your other contracts on Upwork, your client deposits project funds in escrow before the contract starts. When you've completed the work, you'll request payment from your client.

Thank you, Abhimanyu. This information is useful.

I’ve reviewed the direct contract option. It indicates that it is a contract I can send to a client who is outside Upwork. However, in my situation, the client is new to Upwork and is the one who sent me the direct contract. Why do I still need to pay the initial contract fee if I am not the one setting up the contract?

Please share your thoughts if you have more information.

Thanks.

1. The fee needs to come from your account, not the client's. There's nothing to stop you from asking him to pay you back the $5, however, I would advise against this. Not only would it be petty, but it's not right to expect clients to pay your expenses for you. If you aren't making enough money to cover your expenses, then you should increase your prices.

2. Freelancer Service Fees – Upwork Customer Service & Support | Upwork Help

3. Yes, clients pay a contract initiation fee and marketplace fees. The fee will be going as high as 8% in October, so I think that a lot of low-budget clients will stop hiring on Upwork, and/or there'll be a lot more circumvention.

4. Some require it, some don't, but no, the client has nothing to do with any fees that you pay. Upwork charges these fees, not the clients. It's confusing at the moment because Upwork tried to make freelancers pay to respond to all invitations, but must have found that many were declining invitations as a result, so now they seem to be experimenting and making changes.
