Freelancer Holding Funds via Upwork

Hello everyone!

I'm relatively new to Upwork as a client and have a question I hope someone can help me with. I've recently been working with an international freelancer who has yet to have an opportunity to set up an account to withdraw the funds I pay them. I am OK waiting until they resolve this, as I enjoy working with them.

I understand they would have 180 days to withdraw the money; however, what does that mean for me? Would money still be removed from my bank account as payment for the weekly hours even if the freelancer hasn't taken them yet, or will this all hit my account simultaneously once they set it up? I'd hate to be hit with a massive charge all at once and without notice, and I would prefer the money be taken out weekly even if the freelancer can't access it yet.

Can anyone provide some clarity on this situation?

Hi Karim,

Please know that even if the freelancer doesn't have a payment method set up yet, you will still receive an invoice on their logged hours or if it is a fixed-price contract, you'll need to fund the escrow which will be charged to your billing method. This means that you will not be charged with a lump sum payment once the freelancer sets up their payment method.

Your payment will still follow the process of paying hourly contracts or fixed-price contracts. Please feel free to check the articles below:

I hope this helps.

Upwork will take your money within default terms (each week) then will hold this funds for freelancer. So you will pay like freelancer have all in order.

Hello Kristina,

Ah, I see! So once they log in the hours and I am invoiced on Monday, I will be charged for that time regradless of whether or not they take the funds from Upwork immediately or some time within the 180 day window.

Got it, thanks for the help!

Hi Karim,

Thank you for reaching out.

You are correct! Regardless of whether the freelancer has set up a withdrawal method or not, you will still be billed according to your contract terms. This money will be held in the freelancer's account and they can withdraw them at any time. Funds held in the freelancer's account will only be automatically disbursed by Upwork to a freelancer if it is over 180 days and they have not withdrawn.

I hope this helps. Thank you for choosing Upwork.
