VAT number in Portugal

Hi there, I have no clue why my Portuguese VAT number was not acepted by UpWork. In my point of view VAT number is the NIF (tax number) that we have in Portugal.
I've diving around the suport tickets that were open in foruns but I don't find the real answer for that.

Hi Diogo,

 

Thank you for reaching out to us. I believe you're referring to the Tax Identification Number which is the number that your country uses for collecting your tax information and may have a different name, such as PAN in India, for example. Some countries may use a national ID number. 

 

You may be able to find information about your country’s TIN here. If you have questions about your number, you will need to consult a tax advisor in your country or contact your local tax authority.

Hello I am having issues adding my VAT number. I am a portuguese citizen and I am trying to enter my NIF but it says it is not valid, I tried to enter it on the format PTXXXXXXXXX. Can you please help me with this?

Hey!

I believe Upwork doesn't accept our NIF in the VAT ID because it is or personal tax identification. As I could check around the forum, is that, in order for us to withdrawal our earning from Upwork without paying the US taxes, we must issue a Recibo Verde to Upwork and, to do that, we need to open an individual company as freelancers. 

So, the VAT ID will be not our personal NIF but our individual company Tax Number.

Anyway, I hope Upwork moderators or anyone who is from Portugal and recurring withdraw from Upwork, can clarify this.

Hi Maricio, do you know where we find our Individual Tax number to use as the VAT number on upwork? Looks like the whole community are struggling with this one!

I have the same issue, I used my NIF as VAT ID "PT123456789", and it won't accept even though i have a my NIF Document with my Portuguese adress and a i am registered as self employed on financas. Please any idea how to solve this

Hi Pedro,

 

I checked your account and it looks like the submission was rejected due to an invalid VAT. If your VAT number was declined, it was likely because:

 

  • The country on VAT ID doesn’t match the country on your Upwork profile
  • The name on VAT ID doesn’t match the name on your Upwork profile
  • Your VAT ID is expired
  • Your VAT information was entered in an invalid format (check correct format for your country)

You can check this page for more information about adding your VAT. It would be best to reach out to your tax local advisor so that they can guide you further.

Hi, I have the same issue:
My freelancer tax number from Portugal keeps getting rejected. I´'m properly registered, but it does not get approved.
Whenever I enter it, I get a rejection mail after a couple of hours, requesting me to do the same thing over and over again. I have the proper registration and documents if you need them.
I tried to contact support via the chatbot, but I'm getting the same advice and not getting anywhere. Could someone from Upwork support please help me resolve this issue?
