Hi,
Can someone please tell me if my earnings are going to be suspended or will Upwork take 30% for tax if I don't have my Tax number in time?

I understand your concern. I would like to clarify that you will not be able to withdraw your earnings from Upwork until you complete the form. Also, if you do not complete the required form, we will be required to withhold up to 30% of your future earnings on Upwork and send them to the IRS. We will not be able to provide refunds on the withheld funds submitted to the IRS, even if the forms are later completed.
I shared your report with our team and one of our agents will reach out to you using a support ticket to assist you further. You can access your support tickets here.
Thank you,
Pradeep

Good Day, Mr. Pradeep H.
I have also received a notification concerning my W8BEN form. However, like Ruth, I am also a student freelancer from the Philippines. I am also not a tax payer yet. Is there an alternative way to complete the form without having to provide a TIN? Thank you.
Jul 15, 2023 12:38:55 PM by Luiggi R
Hi Gerald,
This is the number that your country uses for collecting your tax information and may have a different name, such as PAN in India, for example. Some countries may use a National ID number. You may be able to find information about your country’s TIN here. If you have questions about your number, you will need to consult a tax advisor in your country or contact your local tax authority.

Hello Pradeep,
We have the same case of Thomas, by 7/19/2023 my withdrawal will be suspended if I am not submitting TIN Number and here is my question, Is it possible to extend more days or week the deadline? Or are my incoming earnings still safe until I submitted TIN Number? Thomas is right things takes ages here in our country.

Hi! I'm also still in the process of getting my TIN as I only just graduated and it takes a lot of time here in the Philippines to get one. I need really need this payment (mainly to update my TIN) and I don't know how to continue without being able to withdraw. Is there any way to extend this or to at least continue working/withdrawing while I wait for my TIN. I heard before that Upwork will take a percent of my payment if I don't have my TIN yet. I'd rather that than being suspended and not being able to withdraw. Please help me. Thanks!

Hi Pradeep H,
My tax id here in EU is being processed at the moment. I am currently living here and it may come out within the next month or so. I have a pending job right now and I haven't submitted it yet becuase my tax id isn't ready. How long can I keep my balance on my Upwork account while waiting for my tax id?
Regards,
Noel H
PS I have a Filipino tax ID, Can I use that even if I am now based here in EU?

I have a problem i requested already payment before i updated my tax information. What will happen to that please help me. I need to get my earnings

Hi Eterni,
I checked and it looks like you have successfully withdrawn your earnings. In general, Direct to Local Bank payments take up to seven business days to arrive at your bank. There is a 12:00 pm (noon) UTC cutoff time for same-day processing. After that, transfers will be processed the following business day. Bank holidays in the U.S. or your country can delay your funds.

I am a freelancer from the Philippines. Upwork has notified me that I need to fill out my W8BEN Form, but I can't complete it because I am a student, so I'm not a taxpayer in my country yet. I don't have a Tax Identification Number.
How can I complete this form alternatively without a TIN?
Thank you

I do not know how it works in your country but normally if you are a student and as a result are not registered as a tax payer then you are not suppose to performing freelance contracts because you would then be receiving income without however declaring them and without paying the taxes you owe to your government, it’s as simple as that.

Hi,
i already updated my tax information .but still this message shown in my account.please can you help with this ?

Hello Isuri,
Have you ensured that all three tax forms required by Upwork have been filled out and submitted? If so, it could be a minor technical issue on your side.
A quick suggestion would be to do a hard reload of your browser page (CTRL + F5 on Windows or CMD + SHIFT + R on Mac). If that doesn't work, you could also try clearing your browser cache. These actions can help refresh any outdated information that might be causing the issue.
If the problem still persists after trying these steps, you might want to attempt accessing your account from a different device. Sometimes, a change of device can help eliminate persistent issues.
I hope this proves helpful and your issue is resolved soon!

Hi Isuri,
I can see that you have not provided your Tax Identification Number (TIN) on your Tax Information page yet. Hi Masoumeh,
We have no TIN in my country either. Could you tell me, please, how you have solved the problem if you have. As it seems Upwork support only copy paste the same answer to everybody.
Thanks in Advance,
Anna

We don't use Tax Numbers (TINs) in the UAE, as confirmed by the OECD document available at www.oecd.org. This could potentially affect our activities on Upwork.

Hello there! I have a small problem. I had filled this part of my close profile. But I got this message in my mail.
I am not a US citizen. I was born in Uzbekistan and now live and work here. Can you tell me more clearly what to fill out? I spoke to one of the local tax collectors and he couldn't help me at all. Because we don't have this type of document.

Hi, i saw this warning "Action Required: Your withdrawals will be suspended on 7/19/2023 if you do not provide updated tax information. For more details, read our FAQs.". I am about to get my tax. Identification number but the place in which i will register is far from where i school in college, so i have to wait for some months like less. than 2 months, before i register TIN, so i want to ask, what can i do, will my account be suspended till when i register my TIN and can i still keep my earnings in upwork till i update my Tax information. I really don’t want any issues. Thanks waiting for a rely.

I have the exact same message even after I updated and verified my Tax Info. And Upwork doesn't have any customer support chat available for the last month. Don't know what is the best way to contact their support.

Previously Upwork said the below. It is still here, https://support.upwork.com/hc/en-us/articles/211063938-Form-W-8BEN-or-W-8BEN-E#:~:text=Without%20the....
Looks like they have changed their mind and will just withhold earnings.
I could have accepted the 30%. Have been trying to contact support etc to see if this is still an option, no response.
Guess this will be my last week on Upwork after 12 years and just concentrate on the other freelance sites I work through if I don't get clarification.
I'm in the same boat. Applied for a TIN in the Philippines months ago.

Hello everyone,
I'm a 4th year chemical engineering student working as a freelancer for a petrochemical company. I've been receiving payments smoothly for the past 3 months. However, Upwork recently informed me that I can no longer withdraw money without providing my tax identification number.
As a Yemeni living in Malaysia on a student visa, I face challenges due to the absence of a proper tax system in Yemen. Any advice would be appreciated.
Thank you.

Iqra, you have a lot of work to do before you try to get a job. This is the community forum, where people post questions or ideas. You will not find a job here. If you want to freelance, you need marketable skills, money for connects, time, patience, and sending many proposals before you find a job.
With your profile, you are only going to be scammed. You state you are a writer, yet you are not bilingual or native in any language. Your introduction, though brief, has multiple errors. With your listed skills, and your profile, you will only find scammers. You need to assess your skills, and whether you are ready to freelance.
Read this post and follow every link. The read all the threads in the forum from people with no skills who are scammed.
If you want to be a freelancer, you are responsible for everything that happens here.

Thank you for your respone,
Unfortunately, Yemen is not listed in the link you shared. Moreover, due to the ongoing conflict in Yemen (war), official documentation and legal processes, including tax-related matters, are significantly disrupted and unavailable. In such circumstances, it is challenging to obtain any sort of legal documentation or information.
I am genuinely at a loss as to how to proceed in this situation. I assure you that I am willing to fulfill my obligations by providing any necessary documents and paying the required taxes. However, the prevailing circumstances prevent me from doing so.
Thank you for your time.

I have the same issue as a citizen of Nepal: it will take ages to obtain a PAN card. Could you please clarify what will happen to my earnings if I don't provide tax information until the 19th? Will my account be suspended, and can I regain access after submitting the tax details, which will definitely take a couple of months? Thanks.
