I received an email from a private client a few moments ago. I do the occasional edits for him. While reading the brief, I caught myself editing while reading. This is something I tend to do with everything I read.

Is this just one of my idiosyncrasies, or do you find yourself doing the same?

Idiosyncrasy. :-)

I don't do that. Unless I'm paid for it. Or unless it's for a close friend.

Irene, I tend to it also; I just don't share edits with the person.  Smiley Wink

I'm always in editing mode.

But I'm prone to idiosyncracies...

Like Kat, I am always in editing mode. Of course, this applies to my own writing, as well. I not infrequently re-read my own e-mails, Forum postings, etc., and notice typos and/or style that could be improved. I cringe! Sometimes, I am unable to edit.

Used to drive me absolutely nuts in a classroom when I had teachers who were poor spellers and/or poor with punctuation. I just longed to go to the blackboard to fix their errors! Even worse when the teacher was, for instance, not good at correctly conjugating verbs (might become confused if he/she wrote out a very long sentence, in which the subject and verb were separated by too many other words).

I think that I am "hyperlexic," to some extent. It is adaptive, in my work as a proofreader, editor, and translator.
