Would Really Appreciate Some Tips From Veteran Freelancers

Hello, everyone! I've recently transistioned from using Upwork on a part time or as needed basis to using it full time. I would love any suggestions as to how I can make my profile more marketable to clients, I predominately write contemporary romance/Erotica. I've noticed that my JSS is pretty low, but I had contracts open for a long time when I worked another job and freelanced on the side. I've closed them since but I guess that I could have received negative private feedback as well. Any tips to improve my JSS score and attract more invitations from clients?

Hi Alicia!

The first thing to do is review Upwork TOS:

Examples of prohibited uses of the Site or Site Services include:

  • Seeking, offering, or endorsing illegal, obscene, or pornographic services or activities, including services (i) that would violate the intellectual property rights, including copyrights, of another person, entity, service, product, or website or (ii) that would involve the creation, review, or editing of pornographic, erotic, obscene, or sexually explicit material;
  • Posting content that is offensive, defamatory, profane, vulgar, obscene, threatening, discriminatory, illegal, pornographic, obscene or sexually explicit in nature;

It is my understanding that Erotic material isn't allowed on Upwork (offering to write or advertising for a writer to create such material)?

Hi Alicia, and welcome to the freelance community.

I've been using Upwork for a few years, since it was called oDesk, to supplement my freelance income. (I have several regular clients and use Upwork to connect with new prospects and fill in the gaps when my other work is slow.)

In my experience, the best way to maximize your profits is to focus on adding value to your profile and presence for potential clients. You're off to a good start with your summary and samples. I'd suggest taking as many of Upwork's skills tests as you feel confident completing. The more "top ranked" scores you earn on those tests, the better- many clients have a baseline score they're looking for- like people who've scored "in the top 20%" in grammar, for example. Skills tests demonstrate that you, at least presumably, have the basic skills needed to write effectively.

Do watch out for the ToS- you don't want to lose potential contacts by getting your profile yanked for a ToS violation.

Aside from that, go out, learn how the platform works, and apply to any jobs that look interesting and like they fit your skill set and interests. I've written everything from an e-book on "larger women's" fashion to how to make better cheese at home. It's always something new in this business. You'll never be bored, and if you concentrate on building your business, you won't necessarily have to live on Ramen, either. 😉

True story- I've been a single mom for 5 years, having been a stay at home mom for 12 before my divorce- and I've been able to support myself and two teenagers on my freelance income. Necessity builds muscle, believe me. Keep working on your skills, and treat this like a real job- like your paychecks are going to cover your groceries and gas for the upcoming week- and you'll find a way to succeed.

Best of luck!

Mary

Hi Mary,

Your story is super encouraging, thank you for sharing that. I am new to Upwork and unfortunately I have been contacted by 2 people who I now realize were scammers! What do you do to make sure person or company offering work is legitimate?

Thanks,

Angela

 Angela,

Welcome to Upwork. To answer your question, there is a thread that discusses this very thing, in detail. Run, do not walk to: Tips to Avoid Questionable Jobs

And also, because I noticed you profile is a little shaky, you really should read lots of THIS thread: https://community.upwork.com/t5/New-to-Upwork/Getting-Started-on-Upwork/m-p/264214#M2460

Hi Pandora,

Thanks for the info!
