Since the blockchain could highly improve some of the processes here on Upwork, I wonder if there's a research team or something working on this.

Upwork can become something more interesting with web 3.0 technology.

I can't say much from an official Upwork perspective, but on a personal note:

Blockchain communities are up to something, especially the DAOs, which is kinda cool.

In few years maybe. It's not efficient enough for corporate yet. Upwork doesn't even accept crypto yet.

It's not about crypto. It's about the technology as a whole.

Crypto is just one element. Upwork can easily create its own token and it will have the potential to revolutionize stuff. 

I'm glad to know that Upwork is working on this.

And crypto exist for much longer than web3. Yet it's not used by Upwork.

Coorporate rarely revolutionize stuff. They take something that works already.

100% agree with you!

And I add that coorporate serves its own interests, and their interest is the classical monetary system & the old-fashioned traceability (with its flaws, of course).

To move to a system "without" flaws, and whose traceability is PUBLICLY accessible to all, is a danger for them more than anything else.
