Meet our Community Featured Contributor Mikko R.
What job category do you work in? VR/AR consultancy
When did you begin using Upwork? When it was still Elance 😉
Tell us a little about yourself and how you got started Freelancing, or running your business online? I had dreamed about running my own business from sunny Penang Island, Malaysia, for about 5 years before I went solo. I just realized, one day after accepting that my startup in Singapore didn't work out, that THIS is what I could do as my own business: build new products for startups. The timing was perfect, so I changed my hometown and job... for good!
What do you enjoy the most/least about working online, Mikko? Coconuts! (#coconuts that is, haha.)
What was your most successful project/contract? I suppose it was that $8K Kinect product demo on the good old Elance site that I finished just before Upwork came about. That track record made me Top Rated from Day 1 of Upwork, and it's been great ever since that in December 2015!
Do you have any advice for other users on Upwork? Pick your niche VERY carefully. Start with something that is not a saturated market so that you can avoid most of the competition. Follow Sun Tzu: "Victorious warriors win first and then go to war, while defeated warriors go to war first and then seek to win." I had one keyword and did just one type of projects for the first 3 years as I managed to get all the best gigs!
Anything else you want to add? You can also share some fun interesting things about you
Don't worry if you feel horrible at times because you're outside your Confort Zone. That's freelancing in the beginning. Just keep going, don't give up, find your own way to make your success. Eventually, you will land at the Coconut Zone and I can tell you living in that zone permanently feels so gooood!
