I'm curious if anyone could let me know why some tasks required only 1 connect, but many tasks required 6 connects.

As a freelancer or agency, you'll use Connects to Submit Proposals and let clients know you're interested in their project. You receive ten free Connects every month at the beginning of your billing cycle and bonuses for some interviews you win. We will send you a notification in Upwork (notification bell) and an email when you earn free Connects. For more information on how this works, check out our guide here.


To purchase Connects, go to Settings > Membership & Connects and click on the green 'Add More Connects' button. From there, select the amount to buy and click on the 'Buy Connects' button. Please note, that if you have sufficient funds on your Upwork balance, the charge will be applied to your Upwork balance. Previously, when I spent connects to apply for a job, the job was closed/canceled / no longer available without anyone being hired. But, I still didn't get a refund for my connects. 


Here is a piece of detailed information about the job title, date, and connections spent along with the screenshot attached for your reference in a sequential order:

  1. "Content Writing": 26th July 2023- 7 connects
  2. " Freelance Content Writers": 28th July 2023- 4 connects
  3. "A Marketing Blog is Needed": 10th August 2023 - 11 connects



It is a sincere request to Upwork to look into this issue seriously and refund back 22 connects spent on unavailable jobs without anyone being hired so that I can spend those connects on the latest jobs. 



Upwork does not refund the connects if job is closed without any hires. It will only and only refund if:

-Client themselves cancel the job posting.

-If Upwork cancels the job if it violates their TOS( Terms of Service).

Not otherwise!

Please tell me what is the validity of the connects in agency and freelancing plus account ?


Connects are just as "valid" in any way they are used, by freelancers, plus or otherwise, and agencies.


Perhaps, you meant another word or term? They spend the same.

Thank you for your questions. I would like to inform you that the Connects you have purchased or earned will be valid for one year from the date of acquisition. After that period, any unused connects will expire. Check out this help page for more information.

How can I collect free Connects.


Its nice question, but its difficult.

1. Option is available if some client approach you.

2. You got a interview invitation.

3. Any code or redem is available to you.

                  I sent one proposal with name of **Edited for Community Guidelines**. This job have been cancelled from client side. But i didnot receive any refund of connect. this is second time this happen to me.

please look into this matter.

The job post you're referring to wasn't canceled by the client, but it expired. As a reminder, a Connects refund does not apply when a job post expires. You can check this article to learn more.

Are you referring to the 10 free monthly Connects? I checked your account and it looks like your billing cycle resets every 24th of the month. You should receive your next free Connects on the 24th of October.

Additionally, I checked and it looks like you have some funds under the In review tab on your Overview page. This also includes any fixed-price milestones you've submitted for review. Clients have 14 days to accept (or ask for changes on) submitted milestones. You can learn more about getting paid for a fixed price contract here

I need free connect urgently

I don't think you will get the free connect whenever you want. If you want connect urgently, then you can purchase it.

I tried to buy connects of 30 usd. but Upwork charged me money only, didn't provide connects. I thought it's my mistakes so I tried once more, but it's same. I only lost 60 usd.

Could anyone help resolve this issue?




I'm in the same boat as you, I think they are just taking longer to appear, it's no longer instantaneous, which is annoying.

Some clients on freelancing platforms have the option to set the number of connects required for their job postings. It could depend on their budget, the urgency of the project, or their perceived value of the task.

I am new to the platform, but I have 10 applied proposals, from which only one proposal was opened by the client. Is there any possibility of getting back my Connects, spent for the application that was not even opened? 



Only one possibility, If the job is cancelled you will get your contacts back.

Welcome to the connects game. Unless the post is closed by Upwork, or by the client with no hires, you won't be getting those back. Be very careful when you apply to projects, because it has really turned into a money generation feature for the platform. Do not boost your proposals either. Its not an effective feature. 

Please become familiar with Upwork's Terms of Service on this website, and it will explain how connects work.


To get work, the first two sentences of your proposal will determine if the client has seen enough of it to want to want to read the rest of it, then eventually hire you. You have a lot of good examples of your work, and probably need to take a look at your proposals.


There are a lot of people here competing for the same jobs, so you will really need to stand out, and explain to the clients why you are best suited for the job. I hope this helps.

if i withdraw any proposal, then connects of that proposal will be restored or not?

In the following cases, Connects will be returned: 


  • If a project is canceled by the client before a contract is made, Connects you used on that proposal will be returned. This does not apply to expired job posts.
  • If we remove a project’s post because we believe it violates our Terms of Service, Connects you used on that proposal will be returned.

If you have applied for a job and it’s no longer available because of a violation or wasted Connects on a job proposal that turns out to be fraud, we will return your Connects. In these cases, Connects are credited back to your account for reuse — not for a refund of their cash value. I created an agency yesterday and it still has no connects available. Its been almost 24 hours since the billing period commenced, do I need to do anything more?

Thank you for reaching out to us. The free Connects are only given to freelancer profiles and there are no free Connects when you start an agency as you won't be able to submit proposals for the agency unless you subscribe to the Agency Plus PlanThis also means that you can only purchase Connects once you have upgraded your agency plan.
To upgrade to Agency Plus:

  1. Go to Settings  Memberships & Connects
  2. Click the View or Edit Membership Plan
  3. Click the Upgrade button on the Plus plan


Here are the benefits of having an Agency Plus: 

  • Grow your team with unlimited members.
  • Customize your Agency Profile URL to highlight your business.
  • Be competitive with insight into competitor bid values on jobs.
  • Engage and apply by purchasing shared agency Connects.

  • You’ll receive 40 free Connects when you register for Upwork for the first time
  • You’ll receive 30 free Connects if you earn a Rising Talent badge
  • You’ll receive free Connects (the number can vary) when you win an interview with an established client on Upwork. (To prevent gaming, we aren’t sharing all the details of what we consider “established.” In general, it’s a client who has hired and spent on Upwork in the past.)
  • You’ll get a one-time Connects bonus if you complete an Upwork Skill Certification
