Question about the 20% fee Upwork takes until $500

Is this down to 10% after $500 total with one job only or all together if a freelancer does 5 separate jobs for me that totals $500 do they get the reduction to 10%?

The second. Once a freelancer bills 500 USD altogether for the same client (via one or numerous contracts) the fee reductions to 10% start.

Hi Josh,

As a freelancer, you’ll pay a sliding fee based on your total lifetime billings with a client. Here’s how it works:

  • $0-$500 in earnings from a client: 20% service fee applied to earnings
  • $500.01-$10,000 in earnings from a client: 10% service fee
  • $10,000.01 or more in earnings from a client: 5% service fee

You can learn more about the Upwork sliding fees in this help article.
