What happened to the message history with contractors?

After being away from Upwork for a while, I logged into to find a communication I had with a contractor in 2017.  But it looks like ALL of my communication with ALL contractors have been deleted prior to 2019.  Is there a way to recover my message history?  I don't recall Upwork notifying users that historical info would be wiped out.
