Can I request an amount lesser than what is in escrow for a fixed price contract?

I am currently working on a gig that is a fixed-price contract, but now I and the client have decided to create a milestone from it so that I can take an amount lesser than what is in escrow. When I am done with the full contract I can get the rest payment. Can I submit the files I have and request a lesser amount? would the remaining balance stay in escrow or would it get refunded back to the client? 

Please I am confused about what to do, I'll greatly appreciate a response.

Once your client releases payment, they will see the option to edit the amount of the milestone fee. You may want to share this article with your client to learn more about this.
