Getting work - dry spell

I have worked on the desk for several years and have a 100% rating and some excellent testimonials but I have NEVER struggled so long to land a job...is it just me? I am choosing good matches; writing original proposals - brief but addressing the needs of the client - supplying examples but landing nothing. 20 proposals and one month later- several nibbles but no work. I am starting to feel jinxed. Has this happened to anyone else???? Lianda Martin.

Hi Lianda,

Yes, this has happened to me many times. However, now I'm struggling to get all the jobs I have landed done. The source of the jobs is not all from Upwork. Maybe you should look around a little.

Feast or famine defines the freelancing business. I have often felt the draught! Another freelancer has recently written about Upwork angst: Will work dry up? Will my stats fail? Will Upwork die the death? I imagine most of us have experienced that too.

When I have particularly lean moments, I give Upwork a rest for a week or so - look out for off-site clients; catch up with housework, administration etc. and then get back to the bidding board. That sometimes works.

Housework? OMG! Do you mean I have to remove those pretty spider webs in the corners? (I've recently acquired two cats, and they love eating the creepy-crawleys anyway, so...) Nah... I take a holiday (also called a 'further training opportunity' in my business).

Feasts and famines, yeah I get those all the time in my line of work. What's annoying, though, is the new UW feature that sets your profile to private automatically after 30 non-earning days. I usually take a holiday or do work through my own business when work dries up on UW, and that can take more than 30 days, so with the new feature there is another online thing I have to worry about. (For me it doesn't make sense anyway, because clients visiting my webiste will read there: 'You can also hire me on Upwork.' With the new feature, if they click on the link, they will see...nothing, and I might lose their custom.)

CATS? Take thyself to the Coffeeshop and show pictures.

My cats don't take down spiders but I trained the dog to go after the big ground dwelling ones that don't make nests (Wolfspinne ?)

I have to eventually remove the webs. But I swear the minute you have cleaned all four corners the first corner is populated again. I don't love them, but they are useful for grabbing annoying flies just as you are having a good-night read (or whatever) . . .

It is also nice to have a squeaky clean house, even if it only lasts until the next deadline.

Problem is, if you wait too long, they'll leave a dark stain on the wall when you remove them. But I think I'll leave them for now. Just a bit longer, until the first frost kills all biting insects.

Wolfspinnen?! OMG! Where do you live???? No, my two 'bad boys' just eat those tiny spiders and daddy longlegs and ..... drag SNAKES into the house! (baby ring/grass snake) Why oh why did I have to let that one cat into my life and let him bring along a friend? I had such a quiet, comfortable life.... Sorry, UW. Will move this conversation to the Coffee Break a.s.a.p.

Re the new feature of turning ones profile to Private!!!!! In the context of struggling to get work...don't yoU just love it when Upwork offers this simple solution: GET SOME WORK!!!!!!

If they would only improve the dross we get in our job feed,  instead of making us pay to remain without work.  Lianda you can ask them to make your profile public again, if it has been set to private.
