How it all works for you?

Hi there. I'm not sure why I ended up having an Upwork account. I think I created it loooong time ago and never used, so I decided to go back and see how it all changed and maybe find some work to do. 

 

So, I started exploring jobs related to logo design, and I'm scared really... When I see the budget $15 for a logo I feel sick... what kind of budget is that?? How I'm I suppose to pay my bills this way? And I'm suppose to "apply!" for it? I'm suppose to spend time to write a cover latter and submit my work, to be able to compete with other people for this mere $15 from which 5 will be taken as a fee so I'll earn $10 if I'm lucky??

 

Guys, please tell me honestly, what the hell is going on in this world, and how do you manage to survive working this way? I suppose most of you live in countries where $15 might bwe wroth something, but I live in Scotland, and for $15 I can buy myself breakfast and that's all. 

 

I'm confused....

You can utilize our search filters to exclude this type of jobs from your job feed. Also fell free to bid on projects with your price as some clients will place the budget as a placeholder.

Supply and demand maybe, since there are a lot of freelancers doing graphic work and less demand for it then it lowered the prices.

 

- change is the only permanent thing in this world, need to adapt so you wont get left behind.

 

Its just my opinion though on how i see it. Goodluck

Norbert, I feel your pain. When I started here, I had to take some low-paying jobs. So many people offer what I do, but I know it is not at the quality that I can offer it. My solution to that is to do my absolute best on every job. I took that solution to those early, low-paying jobs and got some good feedback. After a while, better jobs came along. I had the feedback to back me up. 

 

Know your skills and do better than everyone else. Get some jobs under your belt and build your reputation. If you stick with it (many don't), then it will pay off in the end.

I agree with Shane, and to sum it up Big things start small.

I have a clear answer for you Norbert. I can-t manage to survive on this way anymore. ๐Ÿ™‚ Recently, any price I mention is to high for the clients.
 
Maybe it's competition or I am not good at my work but the fact is, I can't pay my bills this month. I payed electric bills this morning and I don't have enough money to pay the rent for this month. if I don't find some ways to earn money, in two weeks they will cut my internet . I suppose this is "the future of work" they are talking about so much. They don't pay for your insurance, they don't pay for your work place and still you have to fight for low prices jobs with your colleagues on internet.
 
I know I sound frustrated, but I am past that. Years ago I was in the similar situation after I left my old job. In those days Upwork helped me a lot to stay above the water. Obviously, something is changed now, so I have to find some other ways to stay alive. ๐Ÿ™‚

Hi. It might be best to build up a good history with some low-paying jobs at first. When I started a year ago, I took the dime-store stuff and worked hard. I have a 100% rating, but I worked for it. Now, I won't consider anything under $19.00 per hour or a good fixed rate. Just got a contract for a month's worth of very short articles for $800.00. I'm turning down more work than I'm accepting.

 

I think once you become a proven entity, higher-priced clients will come. But like in any other job, you need to start in the mailroom, so to speak.

I am in a similar position. I work as a writer. I have over 25 years experience, but on this site, there are many jobs for people who want to pay less than 2 cents per word. When I started writing at the end of the 80s, I was earning 15-20 cents per word. 

 

But don't give up.

 

I ignore all of the low paid jobs. If you have a portfolio, or a credible histroy in your chosen field, this is your calling card. 

 

Look for work on here that has a decent (enough) rate of pay and apply to those jobs. You might not get them (and whatever people say, you do get people who bid lower than you, people who are often without the skills to do the job justice but win becuse clients always have an eye on the bottom line - so don't feel like you're not good enough, just know that clients have to get their fingers burned before they leanr a valuable lesson), but some you will.

As an example: A recent client wanted to pay less than minimum wage for some copy editing. I applied for the job but at my premium rate. The client then asked for examples, set up a test for a number of possible freelancers, all of whom were charging less than me. But as it turned out, they all did a cheap job of the test and the client wanted to work with me. We negotiated a rate that both of us found acceptable and the client has been very happy with my work.

You can get work. but you have some learnig to do to make much of a success of Upwork. I do too. Lots of it, but it's coming.

Good luck. Don't give in, don't fall for the low rate jobs. If you look closely, you'll see clients returning with the same job but with rates higher when no one responds to the cheap rate. We as a group must stand up to the joke rates and ensure that clients understand they're paying for genuine skillsminus taxes, benefits and everything else that coems with hiring fulltime employees.
