The basic thread here, to recount:  "Some / alot of clients do not leave feedback".   And then downstream issues of dissatisfaction, other-sites-are-better, and so on.

Here's what I do.  I place, in a process, a 'job completion step'.   Meaning, I physically schedule a call or email communication transaction when the final work has been delivered.  And ask what feedback I might get in person, how the project felt, and as part of this.  I remind my clients that my Upwork JSS is my billboard, my megaphone, my front window display, and my first step to gaining new clients.  Said simply: I gently impress upon each client "Your rating really matters to me".

Using this tactic, I have achieved about a, gosh, call it 90% feedback given (if only stars, that's fine with me).  That has taken me across 65 jobs, $275,000 in earnings, and a current 100% JSS.

In the consulting tradition from which I hail, we call this "managing our client".  And just as with any large-scale consultancy, such as Ernst, or Price, or KMPG -- individual contractors can, in effect, manage their client.  Not just do something at the end.  Manage the entire delivery process.

Summary:  schedule a formal project end, ask for personal feedback, indicate (and this is nothing to be embarrassed about) - that the JSS is important for business purposes and then, more good things will happen than not.

Personally, I consider any attempts to influence a client's feedback by such tactics unprofessional and I'd be mortified to have to stoop to such stuff to coerce clients to leave me good feedback. Usually

 

It also doesn't seem to universally work, considering that even though you may be able to coerce your clients into leaving 5 stars more often than not, your private feedback percentage remains the determining factor.

 

Take a look at your "Clients who would recommend you" percentage on your "My Stats" page....

How many accounts do you have? On the one you are posting from, your earnings are less than half that.

Hi everyone, please i really need some clarification on this JSS thingy. How did my score drop from 92% to 79%? i only had one 3.6 rating in this period. my 'clients who will recommend %'is 64%. Kindly treat as urgent

Ouch on the 64% private feedback, that is pretty dreadful...

 

Your JSS dropped because of the poor feedback you got. You had several "not so very great" outcomes lately

 You have no upwork history or JSS, so you are in the same situation as many hundreds of thousands of new freelancers that have not won their first job. So you are no way at any disadvantage, or am I missing something?

Martina- I think Jonathan's issue might be that he had long-term contracts going back years that are dropped from his JSS if they are older thn two years and that he uses the platform unfrequently.

 

This JSS works for people who consistently use thie platform and engage in many separate contracts over short periods of time and long periods of time at the same time.

 

If you are a freelancer who just supplements their income with Upwork with occasioanl work, or uses it as a fallback when times are tough, the JSS system totally disorts a freelancer's record.  Let's say a freelancer had used upwork from 2013 to 2016 and had many contracts with great ratings.  Then worked a full-time job 207-2018 and worked for a single client on upwork all that time that left him a bad review on one contract.  All of a sudent, he loses his job in 2019, in January, and needs to use Upwork as a fallback.  Except now the JSS will literally only count the 1 bad contract for his score and ignore his great work from earlier.

This may not be many people, but there are people that are suffering from less stark exampels of wha I laid out here.  The simple fact is that Upwork has not even bothered to account for outliers with less standard or less desired types of engagement that falls away from the constantly engaged ideal JSS rewards.  JSS needs to find a way to not misrepresent less frequent users and protect longer term histories.  But instead, it does noting, NOTHING, whatsoever, to take these less common circumsances into consideration.  That is why SO MANY longer-temr freelancers are complaining in these forums abotu JSS.

Yes, this happened to me. I worked full time on Upwork when it was Elance. I worked for 5 years and made a living at my writing and had almost 100% 5-stars. A couple 4.8 and that's it! When Elance changed over to Upwork, I was embarking on a different career. I didn't notice that all job ratings and feedbacks didn't transfer over. So when I came back, I basically had to start all over again, even though I was totally qualified for jobs that requested a 90% success rate, etc. Upwork needs to ensure that qualified freelancers show up as qualified when it is clear that they do. I don't know where the other ratings and feedbacks went! They should also be recovered! 

I find Upwork has made working on the site extremely more complicated than it used to be.

 So you thought you open a duplicate account? How's that working out?
