Too costly to apply

The cost of proposals is skyrocketing (coins) ...Additionally, Upwork charges 20 % tax... isn't it a bit too much?

Upwork doesn't charge you a 20% tax, it charges a fee on a sliding scale.  The fee is only 20% on the first $500 with any one client. Then it drops to 10% and eventually to 5%.

And what are "coins"? Do you mean connects? The price of connects has actually dropped from $1 previously to $0.15. It has been the same since the system was changed.

Whether that is "a bit too much" depends on how you, as a business, build your costs into your prices and your rates. And if you can get the same access to the same level of clients cheaper elsewhere.

You don't have to pay anything to Upwork at all. You are free, at any time, to use a different service that offers you a better return on your investment.
