Send proposals as if it wasn't your first job.

My advice would be, find a niche. A really narrow one. That's how I landed my first gig after just a few days on the platform.

If you want to provide common services like web development or data entry, that's great, but let's be honest: nobody is going to choose you over the thousands of more qualified freelancers with way better references. The only chance you have is in finding something very specific that you are uniquely talented at, and making that your main selling point for a bit.

For example, if you happen to know three languages, find a client who needs a book written with a touch of culture from all three. If you're well-versed in an ancient DBMS that nobody uses anymore, find a client that's porting over their databases. That's the key to hitting your first few jobs. Once that hurdle has been overcome, you can broaden up your services, since you'll hopefully have a few good reviews to back up the quality of your work.
