I'm trying to send messages to Freelancers but I can't find the MESSAGE BUTTON.

The only thing I see is INVITE TO JOB

Is it not possible to ask questions directly before I invite them to work?

It IS possible.

Use the "Invite" button to invite them to discuss your job posting.

This is FREE.

This does NOT COMMIT you to anything. You don't need to hire them or pay them. You don't need to hire anybody.

The "Invite" button gives you an opponent to TALK. That is all that happens when you use that button.

In order to initiate a conversation with a freelancer, the client will need to post a job in the Upwork marketplace. Freelancers can then send a proposal for the job post, or the client can either invite a freelancer or send them an offer. You can check this article here for more information about posting a job on Upwork.
