Our mission here at Upwork is to create economic opportunities, so people have better lives. As part of that, we are focused on building relationships so you can focus on the work you love.
Most people in our community are focused on work, and we want to empower you with more information to make sure that fraud doesn't happen along the way. Let’s take a look at some common types of fraud.
Here’s an example of a reshipping scam fraudulent message:
“Hello,
After reading your profile, I am impressed by your experience, I have a job that I think you could help us with. If you are chosen for this role, you will be sent packages of smartphones through the mail, and all you have to do is repackage and send them to another address. All I will need is your address and phone number. If you want to know more about my company, click this link: www.weirdlink.com
Please reply soon,
Suspicious Client ”
What are some of the consequences?
How is Upwork helping?
Upwork has always been committed to protecting both talent and clients from fraud. We are continuing to implement and improve the following safety measures:
How can you report fraudulent activity on Upwork?
Use a flag if you encounter any of the situations above. It's also important to cooperate with the Upwork team on any investigation that takes place. Our team is glad to have you here, and we're dedicated to working with you to keep you safe on Upwork. In general, follow your instincts and ask questions. If a client’s offer seems too good to be true, it probably is. We all play a role in keeping Upwork safe.

Great advice Dorian!
This happens a lot to translators!
TRANSLATORS BE AWARE! Never do test translations, test posts or any kinf of work to prove your skills.
If the client is asking to verify your proficieny in a specific language and doesn't want to take your protfolio or certificates as valid proof, tell them to have a call with you through Upwork and verify right away.
There are many sneaky clients as well, as well as scammers who just want to take advange of users,
Best,
Hugo

Hello,
I haven't even used your platform one time since creating my original profile. However, I was contacted by this man claiming to be called **Edited for Community Guidelines** from China for a 'business opportunity'. He eventually wanted me to give him access to my IP address because he claims UpWork clients do not llike to work with Chinese developers, they would like to work with local people, and his english language is bad and he wanted me to interface with his clients. Of course, he wanted me to give him access to my UpWork profile, create a paypal linked to an email we would both share. I declined, of course. However, it appears like my original UpWork profile is gone. This is not important to me though because, like i said, I have no work history on your platform so it is not important to recover the old profile. I have not needed to use you guys for any work opportunities. However, I may in the future and I am going to create another UpWork profile. So, I wanted to make you aware of the security threat. The fraudster's claimed LinkedIn profile is linked below and he claims to be named **Edited for Community Guidelines**. If there's anything I should do proactively please let me know. Thank you
