Many of us, at some time or the other, have had issues with delayed payments. Upwork policies mandate that we freelancers cannot raise a payment trace request until after 8 business days the withdrawal request was placed. For payments not received/delayed, receiving banks (i.e. the bank you have an account in) will often ask for a transaction reference which is different from the transaction code generated by UW. This reference, I believe, is sent by UW's bank as soon as a transfer has been initiated to a freelancer's account. Would it help if UW were to add this code to the reports page for receiving banks to initiate a payment trace?

No, it would not help. Traces are largely a complete waste of time, no matter which side (sending or receiving) initiates them.
The funds invariably turn up either at the sending or the receiving end (in the bank account they were sent to, or back in the Upwork account of the person who withdrew them) LONG before any results of any trace are received.
