Gmail Google Hangout - is this okay?

I just applied for a position and the person who messaged me said that I should get a Google Hangout ID and do the interview on Google Hangout. Is this legitimate? I thought everyone was only supposed to be on through UpWork? (At least that's what I read through the manual and readiness test).
