My Stats - incorrect

Just last week, I've got a 100% on my stats but when I checked it right now, it was updated last Nov 1 and dropped down to 83%!!!! That is so unjustice!!! I even have a recently ended job last October with 5 star and my client even given me a bonus becase of a good job!!! But after that job, I've got 83%!!

 

Kindly fix this Upwork. That 83% doesn't reflect the good job that I had done.

Hi Junesha,

 

Please, note that contracts where no money was paid also count in your Job Success score although they do not show on your public profile. If you have contracts that have been open for a while but no work is being done on them, it's better to ask your clients to close the contracts. If you do not hear back from the clients, you may close them yourself.

I had asked customer service before and they had told me that jobs with no time logged will not affect job success score. I have contracts that have no time logged because I was waiting for the clients' further instructions but they are not replying it. Will that really affect? It isn't my fault that I have no time logged or worked done because I was waiting for further instructions. I was trying to reach out with them but they are not responding. 
 
It would be injustice that it will affect my job success score. I was trying to communicate with them and sending them not once but many messages about the job. 
 
What is the best thing to do on that? Is it just okay that I will end the contract because they are not responding for quite a long time? BUT, I DON'T WANT THAT to AFFECT my job success score because I was even trying to communicate with them.

 

My understanding is that closing a job and then getting no feedback (MIA client) DOES adversly affect your rating. So close them with caution.

The bottom line.... freelancers are toasted no matter which way you look at it. This is why the JS score is such an unfair and despised number.

We have zero control over it. It is a deep dark secret algorythm. We are at the mercy of clueless and vindictive clients who can leave "super secret" feedback that will toast your rating overnight.

Mind you, we do NOT have that same luxury to rate a client.

Yet we are told by the "powers that be" that we should just work "harder" to improve what we have NO idea needs to improve.

It is like putting a blind fold on someone, spinning them for 15 minutes then telling then not to step off the cliff that is the next step away.

Oh but the JS score is supposed to be the best thing since sliced bread. ๐Ÿ™‚

Our choice...suck it and take it or grovel, beg and plead to clients to not destroy our years of hard work.

I take on very few new jobs because of this.

I believe the same could have happened to me. My JSS was 94% then 97% and now 90%. Maybe it's because I closed a bunch of inactive contracts and even though I asked for the clients to leave feedback, they didn't and they more likely haven't been using the platform in a while.

I agree with you TRACYE G. oDesk before is much better than Upwork. Upwork right now is just merely concerning clients, while we, freelancers, there is only less that we can do to build and maintain our work reputation on our profiles. Even the calculation of JS score is NOT fully TRANSPARENT! Who are really calculating it? A human or a robot or a machine? Why not Upwork will just also build a robot and machine as a freelancer and they will be the one to do what clients wanted?

 

They are more concern of the client's side than us, the freelancers. But every job that we do, they have a 10% of that even the bonus!!!! 

 

I don't trust Upwork anymore. I can only trust now is my long term client for more than 3 years already who knows how I work.  I can't have that long term job relationship if I don't do my best on the job.

 

My account has been suspended before because of an issue which is not true. It was suspended after 2 days that I was emailed that I was eligible for top rated. We know that top rated are categorized with no account issues. It has been cleared already. But the thing that I cannot trust Upwork anymore, at that time is that my client told me that Upwork told him that I was dispute by another client which is not true!! I even sent a screenshot to him my dispute page that it was states there that I have no any disputes. They are trying to show to my client that I was a bad freelancer. Telling things that are not true. 

 

There have been lot of issues on Upwork. oDesk is much better before. I don't want to take also more jobs. Can you imagine, there are job interviews, you had applied to it and client offered you a contract and you take it. If they won't give feedback or not responding and you've got no time logged, it will affect your JS score. 

 

**edited for Community Guidelines**  Upwork don't much mind about us like clients as long as they are getting money from the job that we had worked on. We have NO FULL PROTECTION.

 

 

Building here a career is like building a 5 storey house or more on sands, you won't know if when it will just collapse without your control. No matter how much hard work you put in to build your career, there is no assurance or safety that you could build it as strong as you wanted to and you had build to because your main foundation or base is Upwork that can make your career as weak as sands.

 

I don't depend anymore my career here on Upwork. Specially our livelihood!! Working here means our livelihood. Maybe, we could still work through here but it would only be an additional income but not a full source. We don't deserve to be treated this way specially if we have good skills and we work honestly.

There are millions of contractors on Upwork.

 

I can assure you that a "machine" (a computer) is calculating your Job Success Score.

 

There is no conceivable business model that would allow for real-live humans spending time to calculate each individual's Job Success Score.

 

Nor would such a system be equitable.

 

Imagine this... Two contractors (John and Ben) have essentially identical work histories and essentially identical feedback from their clients.

 

But their Job Success Scores are quite different. That is because when Upwork customer support person Alexandra read John's latest client feedback comment ("He did a fantastic job!"), Alexandra decided to rate John higher in his Job Success Score. But when Upwork customer support person Janet read Ben's latest client feedback ("He did an excellent job!"), she was not as impressed. She thought that the client should have explained WHY Ben did an "excellent job." So she didn't improve Ben's Job Success Score.

 

Then Ben complains, asking why his Job Success Score is lower than John's Job Success Score. Well, it is because Job Success Scores are subjective. Different Upwork representatives are evaluating different contractors' scores using different personal philosophies toward the whole process.

 

This type of situation, with its human variability is NOT what you want.

 

To make a long story short: Your Job Success Scores are calculated by a computer algorithms created by human programmers under the guidance of human project managers and human executives.

 

The Job Success Scores are not intended to be "perfect." The scores are not fully transparent and are not intended to be fully transparent. There is far less mystery surrounding the score than many people believe. The major ingredients of the score are suggested by the "My Stats" page. But the complete algorithm and all possible components affecting the score are not published by Upwork, and will not be. The scores are not intended to represent each individual contractor's self-evaluation of how they should be scored. The scores are not and never will be calculated by perfectly wise human individuals who look at the sum totality of a contractor's interactions with clients and then reach a Solomon-like decision.

 

The scores are intended to present Upwork clients with a wider spread of scores so that the varying quality of different contractors appears more easily discernible.

 

If you understand that Job Success Scores were created as part of the product Upwork offers to clients, and NOT as a service to contractors, then it will help you understand the system better.

What, indeed, is the "use of working so hard" if the JS score is NOT intended as a service to contractors.

 

I'll try to answer your question:

 

I realize that Upwork as a whole is intended as a service for clients, and that contractors are part of the product that Upwork provides. I realize that Upwork does not regard the Job Success Score as a service it provides to contractors. Upwork absolutely DOES NOT think of the 10% service fee it charges as money paid by me (a contractor) in order to create an optimal Job Success Score that meets my needs.

 

I realize all that.

 

But when I "work hard" and do a "good job," then this helps my Job Succes Score stay high, and it makes it easier for me to earn more money.

 

So the short answer to your question is: I work hard on behalf of clients AND I work carefully to avoid things Upwork penalizes, so that my Job Success Score remains high and so that my Upwork earnings are maximized.

Is it fair that you have been born as an average citizen in the Philippines while some lucky bloke gets to be born in the United States of America as son to some rich bugger? NO!

 

Is it fair that I am a lucky guy that is never sick while some 20-year-old kid in Kenya is infected with a deadly disease? NO

 

Is it then fair that we are confronted with some obscure JSS-algorithm that does not take into account negative scores that have been caused by clients without us being at fault? NO

 

What do ALL three cases have in common? Nothing, EXCEPT that in all three cases the unfortunate people have to fight for their right to survive!

 

One of the facts of life is that life itself is not fair!

 

I hear you Junesha, and I do feel for you, JSS can hit me anytime I finalize the next contract. I am not sure how or when the hammer will drop on my head; I just know that it could happen at any moment and for any unjust reason. When it does, I hope I will have alternative resources in place to catch my fall.

 

We as freelancers are all in the same boat; we pay the price financially as well as emotionally when that happens, freelancers should be equal to clients. Unfortunately, this does not seem to be the case. All we can do is hope that Upwork will awaken out of its stupor and level the playing field for ALL involved. Until then hold on tight because this roller coaster platform is moving fast!

Evaluation Criteria my stats
Good day I write the following and I have had a low rate of my succes My stast or jobs, and it seems unfair if they make an assessment have succeeded in the following:
Attracting new contracts
compliance with client assignments
Quick communication with my clients
Communication with clients who have time unanswered, because his occupation makes take time to review projects
have contracts open yet, because we are waiting for instructions from the client to which I have communicated already indicated that dara work short, so why should I lower my score, I ask please a thorough review of my profile is made, messages, because my score should have gone up not down and think that I'm sure was not evaluated well, this affects my future hires.
