Is it an unrealistic expectation on my part to have a potential client communicate the status of a project? For example, I bid on a project on the first day of the month. Is it unrealistic of me to expect them to award the project after fourteen working days? I have a project sitting in my account that has been there for more than three weeks, without any information about whether or not it has been awarded or withdrawn. I consider it unprofessional on the part of a potential client to make me wait and wait and wait.

Yes.
It is unrealistic.
You are not thinking like successful Upwork freelancers.
We submit a proposal and then FORGET about it. After we submit, the job does not exist and means nothing to us. Until we hear from the client.

Don't wait. You will rarely hear anything back unless the client wants to interview or hire you.
I bid and then I promptly forget all about the job post or my proposal unless and until the client contacts me. Don't even think about them.
