Just when I was praising my experiences with the Talent Specialists for the really good work done the past 1 year, I got a really strange email (not an invitation via the platform) from an Enterprise Talent Specialist.
At first look, it looked like some complete random shot from some recruiting agency which I get a lot. But then I realize the email is under the cloud.upwork.com domain. (Upwork is not mentioned in the email subject line.)
What makes this so dubious is:
1. It's a direct email asking for my LinkedIn profile and a resume.
2. It's sent as BCC to me, which usually indicates a long list of spam targets.
3. There is no link of any kind to any Upwork job (there is upwork.com at the end of the person's signature only), so it looks like I'm supposed to reply to this fellow by email.
4. The email is plain text, looking totally not like the normal invitation emails.
5. The category of the job seems to be phone support/customer service which has nothing to do with my competence categories or skills, i.e. this is probably single-keyword-based blind-shooting by someone (or a completely and quite badly automated thing sent to hundreds or thousands of recipients like classic spam).
Of these things that look strange, I don't mind if 5 happens every now and then. It's understandable. Years ago I got lots of requests for translation jobs etc. because of certain words in my profile that indicate that I'm not monolingual. But since it doesn't go through the platform, I cannot decline it with appropriate feedback (usually if the mismatch is totally ridiculous like this I don't feel any shame in selecting the reason Other with the message "Talent Specialist doesn't have enough Upwork experience"... it's accurate IMHO). 😀
But the other issues, particularly 3, make it look so strange... It made me wonder if this is in conflict with your own ToS! 😳
Upwork, I totally 😍love😍 you guys, but could you just check and let me know if this is how your platform is supposed to work (in that case, please improve it... this doesn't really work for anyone involved for the reasons mentioned), or put a little more effort into training the Talent Specialists (as requested by many others several times earlier)... every single one of them?

I can confirm that we have Enterprise Talent Specialists who recruit solely for enterprise teams. However, I want to look into this for you. When you get the time, do you mind sharing more information with me through a DM to check this further with the team?

Just asking so that I and others know next time: Is this direct email representing the normal process or was there some little mishap this time?
Meaning, if I get a similar message in the future, should I report it or just ignore it? I don't want to waste anyone's time.

We do have Enterprise Talent Specialists who reach out directly to potential candidates. That said, the team is looking into the experience and how we might improve it.
