forgot/update password (recovery) not working, does not recognise my user credentials

Hello,
I'm trying to change some settings in my profile (payment preferences) but as soon as I access the settings page a pop-up asks for my password, yet when I give it the system says "invalid password". I have it saved separately and I know I'm typing it correctly yet every time I try it returns the same result and doesn't let me into my profile settings.
I also attempted to use the "forgot password / recovery" option, upon which it asks for my email address, yet when I give it and click "send email", again the system says "invalid user / not found".
Note: I have always signed in with my Apple ID, and also set up my profile with these same iCloud credentials.
Can someone please help me solve this so I can access my profile settings and preferences?
