how to get first job/contract?

Hello! I'm Nida Afzal from Pakistan, and I am an ATA-Certified Translator. My expertise lies in translating between English, Urdu, and Punjabi. Writing is not just a skill for me; it's a passion that I've embraced alongside my translation work. While English is my preferred language for writing, I'm also enthusiastic about creating content in French. I possess the ability to seamlessly translate documents and files across various languages such as French, German, Spanish, Italian, and more. My commitment to accurate and culturally sensitive translation ensures that your content will maintain its integrity and resonate with the target audience.

I got my rising telent badge. I have submitted more than 20 poorposal and no profile view.

I am feeling down. Can somebody review my profile and tell me waht to do next.

Warmest Regards,

Nida Afzal.

Salam Nida,

Getting your first job or contract can be challenging, but here are some steps you can take:

  1. Optimize Your Profile: Make sure your profile highlights your skills, experience, and passion. Showcase your expertise in translation and writing, along with your proficiency in multiple languages.
  2. Craft Strong Proposals: Tailor your proposals to each job you apply for. Highlight relevant skills and experiences, and explain how you can add value to the client's project.
  3. Portfolio: If possible, create a portfolio showcasing your translation and writing work. This can demonstrate your abilities to potential clients.
  4. Network: Connect with professionals in your industry on platforms like LinkedIn. Engage in discussions and share your insights to build your online presence.
  5. Consider Entry-Level Projects: While you're building your profile, don't hesitate to take on smaller projects to gain experience and positive reviews.
  6. Request Feedback: Reach out to clients you've interacted with but didn't get hired by. Politely ask for honest feedback on your proposals or profile to understand what you can improve.
  7. Continuous Learning: Stay updated with industry trends and hone your skills. Consider taking relevant online courses to enhance your expertise.
  8. Be Patient: It's common to face initial challenges. Keep applying and refining your approach.

Remember, it's a process, and persistence pays off.

Good luck, Nida! 👍

What you cannot do anything about:

Nowadays, Upwork quality has gone down the drain. Many good clients have gone and the few genuine remaining often are penny pinchers. Scammers are plaguing the job feed. Competition is extremely high, especially for newcomers.

What you can do something about:

Improve your profile. Upload a picture where your face is visible. Take the Academy courses.

Two of your specialised profiles are basically identical.

On your general profile page, the following languages are mentioned:  French, English, Urdu, Punjabi, Arabic, Chinese, German, Spanish, Italian, "and more" (!). This is a big no-no. Choose the language pair(s) you know better and leave out the rest. A client barely knowing what translation is will run away from somebody claiming she can translate from/into 9 languages "and more".

I prefer to hear people's original thoughts. If there is concern over language, no one cares as long as we can understand each other. If it is to appear knowledgeable, ChatGPT gets a lot wrong.

To begin, ChatGPT and AI represent the future ahead.

Subsequently, I employ AI once I've crafted my content, eliminating any potential issues in doing so.

This is a matter of choice, and I hold your perspective in high regard.

Nevertheless, in the end, each approach possesses its own manner of conveying messages—either through AI or one's unique language.

Should you identify any shortcomings in my content, I welcome your feedback; however, if not, then it's fitting to allow the abundance of AI to permeate everything and reap its benefits.

Undoubtedly, conventional methods will fade into obscurity as the future remains.

By the way, I currently utilize 15 AI tools on a daily basis, and my productivity has at least tripled compared to before the advent of AI.

Here's a feedback: The suggestions are 'empty'. Too many discussions about it already where poor noobs wouldn't know what hit them when they are "answered" with pasted AI texts.

And I am an AI fan. At an end-user level I sometimes use ChatGPT to ask programming questions where it can provide better answers than me Googling, but not all.

Why not 'educate' the noobs to go to ChatGPT instead? Teach them to fish! They'll get your pasted text now, and they can do it themselves again in their entire future!

Btw has anyone created something like 'just**bleep**inggoogleit.com' for chatGPT yet? It's a good idea don't you think?

Shortcomings? The person who opened this thread is giving more credit to a canned, reassuring and one-size-fits-all AI-generated reply, rather than to the suggestions of a fellow translator, pointing out specific issues and telling her she should roll up her sleeves, read and study.

But such is the way of the world, isn't it? Choosing the easiest path.

Your profile is set to private. I can imagine what is there. Even your response is ChatGPT.

Subsequently, I employ AI once I’ve crafted my content, eliminating any potential issues in doing so.

So, show your real writing. No one cares if you use the Chatbot, it goes against you because we all know people who write like this often have no ability to communicate.

Nevertheless, in the end, each approach possesses its own manner of conveying messages—either through AI or one’s unique language.

Except, because you don’t know the reality and aren’t doing research, you and your ChatGPT got it wrong, and now are passing hurtful information to others because you trust the ChatGPTbot.

Should you identify any shortcomings in my content, I welcome your feedback; however, if not, then it’s fitting to allow the abundance of AI to permeate everything and reap its benefits.

It’s fitting to steal? Everything you do? Plagiarism is a valid part of numerous lawsuits, firings, and all kinds of mess because people don’t have skills and use the program to fake them.

I’m sick of telling people what they are doing wrong, and you have been told. Go read the Terms of Service, and the Upwork rules. You could write something helpful, but you choose to plagiarize. Are you aware that all the Chat sounds alike and gets things seriously wrong? I would imagine you don’t care, or else you would not use it in place of your own thoughts.

Undoubtedly, conventional methods will fade into obscurity as the future remains.

Oh, so funny. I remember when we all had to learn to code because there would be no jobs that didn’t involve computers. Now, still, the vast majority if jobs in the world have nothing to do with computers. So, thanks, I’ll get my advice on the future from people who can at least express themselves and have genuine talent.

By the way, I currently utilize 15 AI tools daily, and my productivity has at least tripled compared to before the advent of AI.

Oh, please, show us those statistics. If you are using 15 different programs each day, you aren’t doing a bit of work on your own. How many jobs have you received using your Chatbot? How is your view rate? How many jobs have you completed? What is your JSS? It’s easy to make statements, but much harder to prove them. You make enormous claims. I’m waiting.

Thank you for the time you've dedicated, and your response will be taken into account.

I spent 120 connections but still not received any order, please help

Your profile needs work. Use the Academy to improve. Only apply for a job if you know you are one of the top two, or it is a total waste. If that means you don't apply, then you don't apply. Spending connects is only useful when you know you are one of the absolute best. Throwing connects to boost is also not going to help, unless you are one of the top two.

Everyone knows their skill level. If you aren't very good, you need to get educated and skilled or quit freelancing. Your profile tells scammers you are ready to be scammed.

Why are you spending connects? Are you one of the top two people for the job?

By the way, it looks like desperation to make up your own testimonials. There is no way to know if a client even made those comments.

Your face is not in your profile photo. If there is a religious reason (e.g. veil requirements), then go here.

She just skipped rules reading. Intro video with face so no religious reasons.

Hello Nida Afzal,

It's great to hear about your expertise in translation and your passion for writing and content creation. Congratulations on receiving the "rising talent" badge on Upwork! However, I understand that not seeing profile views and not receiving positive responses to your proposals can be frustrating and disheartening. Here are a few suggestions to help you improve your profile and increase your chances of success on Upwork:

  1. Profile Overview: Your profile overview is crucial. Make sure it's clear, concise, and highlights your skills, experience, and what makes you unique as a translator and writer. Showcase your expertise in English, Urdu, Punjabi, and French translations.

  2. Portfolio: Create a portfolio that showcases your best work. Include examples of translation projects you've completed, writing samples, and anything that demonstrates your skills. This gives potential clients a better understanding of your capabilities.

  3. Targeted Proposals: Instead of sending out a large number of proposals, focus on crafting personalized proposals for projects that align with your skills and expertise. Show that you've read the project description and explain how your skills can address the client's needs.
