It almost certainly means your client failed to pay for the hours you logged and your work diary showed that you did not qualify for hourly payment protection, so Upwork are not paying you out of their own pocket.

But the cleint's payment method was verified. This is not fair as i had did the work requested and always maintained 5 stars with good reviewe on my profile. This is just client scamming freelancers.

Just because a client's payment method is verified does not mean it can always be charged the amount due.

If you had tracked your time properly, you would have been protected and would have been paid regardless.

Yes, it means your money is gone unless the client comes back and pays Upwork.

If the client's payment method declines, there is nothing Upwork can do other than suspend the client.

It will not affect your profile because the client is suspended and contracts with suspended clients are excluded from the JSS Calculation.

Then you are not protected in the (not very common) event that the client fails to pay.

For what it's worth, I've worked over 12.000 hours on Upwork and never had a client not pay Upwork.

Obviously it is horrible when it happens, and it could happen to me any minute as well, but it is not common.

Just as on your other thread, 99% likelyhood that the client didn't pay Upwork, your work diary did not qualify you for hourly protection, so Upwork isn't paying you out of their own pocket.

This is not fair. How can some one run off like this on a very good platform such as upwork. Please tell me there is some alternative to get the money from the client. Man Sad

Hey Imamsab,

Unfortunately as Petra mentioned, if you didn't track your time using the tracker (and record memos etc.), then there's nothing you can do... Upwork can only guarantee payment if you use the time tracker in accordance with their rules. If you fail to do so, then you basically did the work for nothing 😞

If you are working in an OS that doesn't support the time tracker in the future, then I suggest you set up a fixed rate contract with your client (but just so you know, payment isn't guaranteed for this either), and set up milestones instead of doing the entire project in one go... This is my preferred method of working as it ensures proper communication as you move along on the project.. and you don't end up doing the entire project for nothing. Another thing: always check client feedback and history before accepting an offer.

That's very hard to digest. And the client was new on upwork and didnt have any feedback but 2 open jobs where freelancers where working on. This was the first time i faced a client like this. All my other clients were good. I always just checked there profile before even applying to the job or accepting the invite. But what can i do for new cleints who dont have any history on upwork. Next time will set up mile stones but that would mean i wont increase my upwork worked hours. I am really stuck with this as this was lot of money i lost.Man Sad

I'm sorry about that but it happens! Not all clients are honest (and to be fair, not all freelancers are honest either).

I've had a couple of clients screw me over in the past too... it's a learning process. Whenever something like this happens, just learn from it and move on. That's all you can do unfortunately 😞
