Your withdrawals will be suspended on 7/19/2023 OR 30%

Hi,

Can someone please tell me if my earnings are going to be suspended or will Upwork take 30% for tax if I don't have my Tax number in time?

Hi, I'm a seller based in Singapore. Does submitting a Form 'W-8BEN' help to reduce the 30% withholding amount of my revenue? Where can I get the 'Form W-8BEN' and who to submit to? Please walk me through the process to better protect my rights as a seller on the platform. Thank you!

Hi There,

That's correct! Without these forms as proof that you are a non-U.S. Person, Upwork will be required to withhold up to 30% of your future earnings on Upwork and send that withholding tax to the IRS. As long as a new W-8BEN/W-8BEN-E form is filled out completely and validly, we are not required to withhold U.S. income tax.

To complete the W-8BEN or W-8BEN-E, you’ll need to complete three cards in the Tax Information section of your settings. You may complete the form by going to Settings > Tax Information. You may also check this help article for more details. Let us know if you need further assistance. Thank you!

I am not new to upwork and have existing contracts already. But now upwork has asked me to provide tin to be able to withdraw my earnings, I have already sent a tin application from the BIR but has not received an update yet.

Is there any way I can withdraw my funds and add the tin whenever it becomes available

*I need to pay bills and I badly need to withdraw payment

Hello,

I am not a US resident and in my country of residence (Nigeria), according to the reply I got back,

TIN is not issued to individuals. It is issued only to corporate entities or enterprise.

Hi Umair,

If you recieved this email email saying that you need to confirm that you are performing your work on Upwork outside the United States, here's what you need to do:

  1. Go to Settings Tax Information > Tax identification number
  2. Select the ✎ edit icon and then select Update
  3. Review the Tax Certification and Confirmation of Unchanged Status and Affidavit of Unchanged Status information, which now includes confirmation that you are not doing work in the U.S., and sign with your electronic signature to certify
  4. Read and sign the Affidavit of unchanged status, then choose Save

You can see this article for more information.

Hi Upwork Teams,

I have the same problem. I am a Lao national holding a Lao PDR passport. I am just a commoner who is a self-employed person until today at the age of 45 years old now. I never have "Tax identification number" nor have I ever paid any kind of tax before.

Please advice on what I should next? Is there any way to fix this problem? I hope my dream of working with UPWORK would not be jeopardize or in vain.

Please feel free to contact me.

Looking forward to your assistance.

Best regards,

Hi Southivan,

This is the number that your country uses for collecting your tax information and may have a different name, such as PAN in India, for example. Some countries may use a National ID number. You may be able to find information about your country’s TIN here. If you have questions about your number, you will need to consult a tax advisor in your country or contact your local tax authority.

Hello,

I am from Myanmar and currently relocated to Thailand as a Student holding Non-Ed visa.

I have no idea how to obtain a TIN number since I am not a worker in Thailand.

Now, Upwork is requesting a TIN number to widthdraw the money.

Please help me with this information. Thank you.

Hi TeNyain,

The W-8BEN and W-8BEN-E are U.S. tax forms for non-U.S. Persons. We and the IRS use them to determine whether you live in the U.S. and what taxes, if any, we need to collect from your earnings on Upwork. You must have this form on file before you can withdraw earnings from Upwork.

As long as a valid W-8BEN/W-8BEN-E form is filled out completely, we are not required to withhold U.S. income tax. Without these forms as proof that you are a non-U.S. Person, Upwork may be required to withhold up to 30% of your future earnings on Upwork and send that withholding tax to the IRS.

Hi there! I'm from Costa Rica. In Costa Rica, there is no specific Tax Identification Number provided by the Tax Authority. The identification used is either the Physical Identification Number of a natural person or the Corporate Identification Number provided by the Public Registry when the company is successfully registered. I have entered the "Physical Identification Number of a natural person" in the tax form since I don't have a company registered. It replies: "Please provide your tax identification number (TIN). If you don’t have a TIN, consult a local tax professional or your tax advisor. For more details, read our help article." Could you please help me to find a solution for this?
