Plagerism found years later

I had a document written almost a couple years ago that was asked to be 100% original content. It looked good a passed my plagerism checker at that time. I put the project/document on the backburner for a couple of years and recently asked to have it edited by a native English speaker since some of the language used in it was just a little off.

As the editor began editing the document she scanned it for plagerism and found a PDF where this document I paid to have written was nearly identical to this PDF (I think improving the English in the document allowed her to find this).  I am so glad it was caught, but feeling really disapointed. Do I have an recourse here? Can I at least change my review of this person.

Yes.

Here is how you may change your review:

Why do you want to be vindictive and hurt a poor slob in third world countries.  I an guessing that since you hired a non English speaker, you didn't pay much.  You get what you pay for.

Wow. This person has their doctorate and was hired because this is an area where they have expertise and was very fairly compensated ($1000+). That is why this is so aggravating. T

Ivy, are you sure this is plagiarism? Two years down the line, perhaps somebody else plagiarised your freelancer. You should check the chronology.

Yes. I had not published it anywhere yet. It was a project I was returning to.

Ivy:
Some freelancers who participate in the Forum bring a variety of experiences when they comment on this topic.

We frequently read stories about freelancers who are highly qualified, conscientious, serious writers who produce quality writing for clients. And then a client (who does not fully understand how certain "plagiarism tools" actually work) accuse the client of plagairism.

This has nothing to you, of course. I'm just pointing out that many in the Forum have seen this topic from many different angles.

None of the people who are participating in this thread - not other freelancers, not other clients, not Forum moderators, and not the original poster herself - have enough information about the writing process the freelancer you hired used to be able to say with certainty that the work you received was plagiarized, or to rate or rank the work with regards to originality.

The freelancer you hired two years ago might be brilliant and 100% honest. The freelancer you hired might be a scoundrel. I don't know. I believe that the majority of freelancers on Upwork offering "writing" services, or identifying themselves as "writers," are actually spinners. Many clients consider all work done by spinners to be plagairism, but many freelancers, particularly those from cultural backgrounds quite different than yours and mine, regard spinning as a profitable way to earn money. Whatever the case is, you have no further obligation to that freelancer, as far I am concerned.

As a client who has hired over 180 freelancers, my advice to you is to put yourself first, and not be so concerned about a stranger on the Internet who you hired a couple years ago. As far as I am concerned, when a contract is over, it's over. If I hired a freelancer yesterday, and that contract is closed, then if I discovered something amiss today, I wouldn't even think about trying to change the freelancer's feedback. I would either contact the freelancer and ask if I could hire him again, using an hourly contract, to rectify the problem, or I would hire somebody else to fix the problem if I didn't think that I could trust the original freelancer to continue working on the project.

Thank you for this reply. I understand it is over. My thoughts on changing the rating is to keep others from having the same issue.

Ivy: That is very thoughtful of you.

But I can assure you that EVERY client who hires writers on Upwork faces the same issue.

(This is not about one freelancer.)
