Who's responsible for the 3% fee?

If I agree on a rate of $1,000 with my freelancer for a job, do I owe Upwork $1,000 and he takes $970, or do I owe Upwork $1,030 and he takes $1,000?

This is a really refreshing question.

Actually, you are responsible for the 3% fee, but the freelancer will receive according to this:

• $0-$500: 20%
• $500.01-$10,000: 10%
• $10,000 or more: 5%

So, if this is your (freelancer and you) first contract he will receive $850, but you'd paid $1,030
