I recently signed up as a new freelancer on Upwork and I am eager to start applying for jobs. However, I have noticed that I have not yet received the initial 50 connects that are typically provided to new freelancers to help them get started on the platform.

Could you please assist me in understanding why I have not received these connects? Is there an additional step I need to complete or a requirement I might have overlooked?

That's not true. It says now that you need to buy Freelancer Plus to get connects, or manually buy them.

Upwork currently requires new freelancers to do one of two things before being able to submit a proposal for a job: subscribe to our Freelancer Plus membership plan for $20 USD a month, or purchase 100 Connects for $15 USD. After you fulfill this requirement you will also receive 50 free Connects to further help you get started on Upwork.

This should've been more properly communicated. The last person I invited and helped here (she didn't know the basics of how the site worked and where each setting she needed was) spent a decent amount of time getting her profile ready and now, after a week of waiting for a chance to actually get some work done through Upwork and learning just today that she won't be able to get paid for her work without paying for Connects she was supposed to get for free as advertised, she doesn't want to hear or read again anything related to this site.
I understand the reasoning behind the paywall, but it seems to have been done in such a rush not even your AI chatbot knows about the changes yet.

Upwork has updated its requirements for new freelancers, who now must either subscribe to our Freelancer Plus membership plan or purchase 100 Connects, before being able to submit a proposal for a job. You will receive the 50 Connects you're referring to after you meet this requirement.

That's actually a good move to remove many scammers and bots. Is there also a plan to support veteran freelancers? Free membership, which is the only one I can afford thanks to predatory changes to UW, gives me 10 connects a month. CHeapest jobs are 12-18. I don't want to be rude but where is the logic in that? Frankly, if UW wants me to wait 2 months to be able to apply for one job, without any guarantee of my proposal being seen because we all know it's a casino, how UW can justify pushing more and more paid options to the platform? Trust me, I'd love to earn more, I'd be thrilled to share part of my earning with the platform that allowed me to earn but... allow me to earn.
