I would recommend firstly to create a complete profile since it is the first thing a client will look. So, here are some usefull articles to read and use as a guide to fill all the details of your profile:

• Create a 100% Complete Freelancer Profile
• Sample: Profile
• Profile Portfolios

Then I would suggest to get a couple of tests to show your expertise:

• Skills Tests

Before starting oto bid on projects I would recommend to understand how the Payment system works:

• Fees & Protections
• Weekly Billing Cycle

Then start looking for jobs that match your criteria:

• My Job Feed

Also, get a feed on your email client byt importing the RSS feed.
