Job posting removed after interview- Want to send check for me to purchase equipment

I sent a proposal, and right away received a text message on my cell phone. Asked me to download Viber messenger, wanted to do interview questions on there, now telling me they will send me funds to purchase the company equipment. How can you get away from jobs that are not legit? Now the position is showing as removed.

Simple. Never communicate outside of upwork before hire.

Hi Kari F.,

Don't go outside UpWork. It's not safe. Also, it's against the UpWork rules.

Scammers target freshers and post jobs where they get more proposals. For example Data Entry Jobs, Typing Jobs etc. Be careful if you do this kind of jobs.

Before starting the work...

Know what not to do here.

For Example...

  • Don't go outside UpWork no matter who calls you. Do the work in UpWork.
  • Do not share any of your personal contact information.
  • Don't ask for money/5 star rating in message box. and etc.

If you need an answer to any question, search your question first in the community. If you don't get an answer, post your question. Because you will get late reply when you post.

Thank you! I am new to unwork and they apparently targeted me!

Scammers target new freelancers because they often grab the first opportunity that arises before :

  • doing their due dilligence;
  • learning how the platform works;
  • reviewing the Terms of Service they agree to comply to when they sign up
  • looking at the many ressources available (like Academy courses)

Sounds like a typical scam. Bad check scam.
