New on UpWork - How do you know which ones are scammers before you submit a proposal?

Getting a bit frustrated, I just created my profile yesterday.  Everyone wants to do a skype interview!  I have received connect credit for one and will be reporting the other.

Thank you.  However it doesn't really answer my question - how to know 'before' I submit a proposal?

Some warning signs:

  • Joined Upwork that day or within a few days
  • They've never hired anyone
  • They've never paid anyone
  • They are looking for a large number of freelancers
  • They are interviewing a large number of freelancers (no one needs to interview 20 people)
  • Their ads are poorly worded with lots of grammatical and spelling errors (although they seem to have gotten wise to this; I believe they copy the wording of legitimate ads)
  • They are offering high pay for "entry level" freelancers
  • Their location reflects the United States but their local time is compatible with Europe or Africa

If you apply and are asked to interview off platform, just report it as a scam. You'll get your connects back when the job is removed.
