VAT number?

Hi, 

I think I have a problem with the VAT number, I am not a US-citizen - I live in Bulgaria. I filled a declaration, which proves that I don't own taxes there, so why am I being charged? Can I stop this?

If I can't stop this, who actually receives the payment of VAT which I make? Is it my country (Bulgaria)? Does this mean that I don't own taxes to the country?

Hi Karolina,

Please note that Upwork is applying and remitting VAT only on its service fee, membership fee and for purchasing additional Connects, in case a freelancer from the EU doesn't provide a valid VAT number. You'll need to consult a local tax advisor regarding any charges that might apply to the services you provide to your clients.
