How did Upwork get access to my checking account? I didn't give it to them.

Imagine my surprise when my husband noticed my checking account was -145$!!!  I looked at my statement and saw this "Upwork' two debits totaling 360.15. I had to put a stop payment on it which will cost me 36$ for each one. I plan on calling the bank and asking if  they can waive since I am a victim of fraud.  I don't have this service, nor have a need. I have a job. I have never signed up for it.  I wondered if this has happened to anyone else? I Just signed up to create an account to communicate with these people.
