VAT number. my Portuguese VAT

Hi, I have no clue why my Portuguese VAT number was not acepted by UpWork. In my point of view VAT number is the NIF (tax number) that I have in Portugal ( 9 nombers ).
I don't find the real answer for that. Thank you for help.
