Contract payment

Client does not want to release cash under vague grounds. Help

Hi, There's a client I'm working with who recently asked for new changes, but there are sincerely no new changes that he requested from me. He just clicked on new changes and wrote to me that the paper is on review for plagiarism. Kindly note that plagiarism checks simply take a few minutes to do with an account. The client is new on Upwork and unresponsive to my messages. When we started, he attempted to set a milestone for less than the budget we had agreed on. I suspect that he is trying to punish me for refuting this and asking him to set the contract at the right price that we had both proposed. I'm also afraid that he does not intend to release the funds in Escrow at all due to his current behavior. I have checked the client's profile and so far he has spent nothing on our site. I truly suspect that he has bad hiring practices and is frustrating freelancers on the site. Kindly advice. Since my intention is just to make money and I also do not want this to affect my profile. I'm even willing to end the contract without pay and to simply block him since I feel very frustrated. I honestly suspect he is punishing me out of spite for calling him out on the contract he had first set for me at a lower price and not what we had proposed. How should I proceed?

Hi Loyce,

I'm sorry to hear about your experience. We understand that occasionally you may have a disagreement with a client about the work you submitted and your payments. We encourage you to always try to work things out with your client first. However, if you do need to take further steps, we created Upwork Fixed-Price Protection to allow freelancers and agencies to file disputes under these two circumstances:

  1. A client ends the job with an escrow balance
  2. A client fails to release a milestone payment despite the delivery of work

To file a dispute on an active contract:

  1. Submit your request here.
  2. Give details to support your claim that the work is complete and your payment is due. Explain the situation with enough information to help the dispute specialist understand your claim.
  3. Our customer service agent will open a case with one of our mediation specialists to review your situation.
