Paid book reviews?

Hi,

I edit books and I've had a couple of clients ask me to write reviews on Amazon when the books are published. They've offered to pay me for my time writing the review and cover the cost of the book.

I've been advised by other freelancers that it is against the law, against Amazon TOS, and/or against Upwork TOS to do these kinds of jobs. Others have said it's fine and don't worry about it.

What are the relevant rules here and how do others navigate similar situations?

Thank you!

Is there any distinction between fake reviews and paid reviews, or is it assumed that all paid reviews are inherently deceptive?

That's a question for ChatGPT 😁

Similar with articles in news magazine/website where they need to disclose if someone paid for it, don't you think?

Haha thanks. I wonder if I disclosed that I was being paid to write the review, if that would be fine. Seems like probably still against the Amazon TOS because it says that free copies are only allowed if a review isn't required, but it would be required by the Upwork contract.

I'll just decline it.
