Update Contract

I put the agreed upon contract amount in escrow. No milestones. The project is taking longer than anticipated. I would like to release some of the funds. How do I do that? When I tried to create a "1/2 way done" milestone, it added the additonal amount to the totale contract rather than enabling me to release half the funds. Thanks for your help.
