Why is Upwork so slow?

Every time I open my browser (Chrome) and I log in, Upwork takes forever to load messages. After a minute or so, it seems that it stops trying (though the loading screen indicates otherwise) and I have to refresh the page. Then and only then will it load normally.

Can't be the browser as I experience the same problem with Opera. Can't be my connection as every other website loads normally.

Any ideas?
