Get Profile Feedback from Experienced Freelancers on Upwork

Getting started on Upwork can take a lot of work and focus. To help make this process a little easier, we’ve created this post where you can request feedback on your profile. The community is full of experienced Upwork freelancers who are passionate about helping others. These users will review your profile and provide feedback based on their experience.

If you’re interested in requesting help, make sure your profile visibility is not set to “Private” and then reply below.

We’re excited to see how Community members can continue to help each other to grow!

Note: A previous version of this post was closed as the number of responses made it difficult to read and navigate. If you had not received a response yet to a request you made, please post again in this thread.

Teame Sisay,

You must complete your profile before applying to jobs.

Since you are new to Upwork, make sure your profile is 100% complete before applying to jobs. The best way to complete your profile is to go through the following Academy Courses and other resources:

Hi Obed,

See the review provided in response to your first message. I think your profile looks great.

Hi Obed,

I found your work extremely interesting and will invite you to join my network! The only comments I have are:

1) Could developing a thumbnail be a fixed-price project? (Apologies if this is an ignorant question, as I in no way mean to undervalue your work, but it was the first thing that came to mind as a potential contractor.)

2) I noticed a lack of client reviews on your profile. Perhaps you could focus on initially taking on projects solely to gather reviews. That's what I did initially; it was challenging but very worthwhile.

I hope this feedback is helpful!

Wishing you all the best,
Fabrício

Abiodun,

The first thing I noticed about your profile is the diverse skill areas presented in your title. Most clients won't use Upwork to locate a writer, biochemist, and data analyst in the same freelancer. Having a diverse skill set is great, but I recommend focusing your main profile on one skill area, and adding one or two Specialized Profiles that focus on other, unrelated skill areas.

Focusing your main profile on one skill area or related skill areas will help potential clients better understand your services and how you can help them. For example, if your main profile focuses on surveying, your title should be specific to only surveying skill areas (i.e., Surveyor or Surveyor | Oil & Gas). Then, your main profile overview/summary should focus on your surveying services, experience, and offer a brief overview of how you can help clients.

In your specialized profiles (i.e., Data Analyst, Biochemist, etc.) you will do the same. Focus your specialized profile titles on specfic skill areas and use the overview/summaries to tell clients about those services and how you can help within those skill areas.

Add a portfolio to show samples of previous work or to demonstrate your skills. We can have a main profile and two specialized profiles, but only one portfolio, which means all of your samples will be added to the same portfolio. The portfolio is a chance to make a positive first impression on potential clients and clients often look for a portfolio. If you don’t have relevant examples to add to your portfolio, you can create items that demonstrate your skills.

Good luck!

Hello Lalita,

I see good information in your profile. Here are a few things I would do to improve your profile:

1) The most important thing to know about the beginning of your overview/summary is what clients can see. When clients search for freelancers, only the first 200-250 characters of your summary are shown. This means you have very little space (approximately two short sentences) to get their attention. You want this small space to include important words (i.e., your services, skills, and experience). You should avoid greetings, your name, emojis, or any unnecessary text.

I recommend starting your summary with a sentence/paragraph that introduces your servcies without your name and emojis. For example:

Skilled web designer and developer with experitise building dynamic websites using WordPress and integrating Shopify e-commerce stores. I can design, build and deploy a strong online presence or enhance your existing website.

I have expertise in:

(...)

2) Your title uses "full-stack developer," but your summary doesn't speak to any full-stack development. If you are not a full-stack developer, you may want to remove it from your title. Otherwise, you will get full-stack development job matches when you really only want web development matches. If you are a full-stack developer, you should add Full-Stack Development to your skills list.

3) Add short job descriptions to each job in your employment history. A job description is especially important when the job is highly relevant to the services you provide on Upwork.

Your portfolio looks great.

Hello Maurine,

I looked through your profile and I think it looks good. However, your overview/summary focuses on your skills and never tells clients how you can help them. Your experience and skills are great, but you must tell clients which services you provide and how it benefits them. Here's an example:

Microsoft Dynamics Business Central and NAV technical consultant with over 10 years of experience implementing, customizing, and supporting Microsoft Dynamics solutions for businesses. I can help you manage finances, operations, sales, and customer interactions in one integrated platform.

After that, add more client-focused value to your summary:

  • Tell clients how you communicate with them and gather feedback to ensure the final deliverables meet their needs.
  • Mention that you stay informed of the latest developments, trends, and emerging technologies in business management solutions.
  • Highlight any Business Central projects you have worked on and your accomplishments.
  • Talk about your ability to meet business challenges and adapt to changing or new requirements if necessary.

Clients will find plenty of professionals with Business Center and NAV skills and experience, so they need more reasons to choose you, and the information you provide can help them better understand why they should hire you and how it will benefit them.

I think you should add a portfolio to show samples of previous work or to demonstrate your skills. The portfolio is a chance to make a positive first impression on potential clients. If you don’t have relevant examples to add to your portfolio, you can create items that demonstrate your skills.

Your certifications and employment history look great.

Good luck!

Anas,

Pricing your services at $5 per hour is going to make clients nervous. They want a confident bookkeeper, not one who is just skating by.

Raise your rates. Check the competition and choose a rate somewhere in the middle.

Hi Everyone

I am new here and not getting projects. Is anyone help me to overcome this and review my profile.

Thanks

Clark S Community Member

Hi Muhammad Umar,

A profile review won't necessarily help you get a job on Upwork. The review is design to offer feedback and suggestions on things you can improve.

Right now, your profile is not set to Public. You must set your profile to Public so we can see it.

Thanks.

Hi Marilu,

Buenos Aires is a lovely city! Welcome to Upwork!!!

Based on the guidelines in this article, here are some suggestions:

Positive points:

1. Clear introduction: You provide a clear introduction.

2. Relevant skills: Your profile mentions skills and areas of expertise, which helps clients understand yours capabilities.

3. Experience: The profile highlights your experience in the field, which can instill confidence in potential clients.

4. Client-focused approach: You mention commitment to delivering high-quality work and meeting client expectations.

Points you may want to improve:

1. Lack of specific examples: You could benefit from including specific examples of past projects or accomplishments to showcase your abilities.

2. Personal touch: The profile text could be enhanced by adding a personal touch, such as sharing a bit about your background or passion for your work.

My Recommendations:

My top recommendation (worked very well for me): For beginners, it is crucial to focus on earning positive reviews. Therefore, I recommend to start by taking on simple and quick projects, even at a lower rate, with the goal of delivering excellent work and earning great reviews.

1. Add specific examples: Include specific examples of past projects or achievements to demonstrate your skills and expertise.

2. Personalize the profile: Share a brief personal story or anecdote to make your profile more engaging and relatable to potential clients.

3. Use formatting techniques: Break up the profile text into sections with clear headings or bullet points to improve readability.

I hope this helps.

Wishing you much success,
Fabrício

Marilu,

Look around Upwork and find other marketing specialists and see how they sell themselves. You could get some good ideas that way.

Generally, Upwork clients are looking for results. If you do marketing, you should be able to describe previous work you've done and explain how that turned out. Did profits go up? Did brand awarness increase? How did you pull that off in the past.

Just to say so, clients really don't hire people because they are passionate about their work. In the first place, to some degree, everyone is passionate about their work, so it doesn't mean all that much to say something like that. Try to aim for information that people hiring marketers want. What are the skills they are looking for? What problems of theirs can you solve?

I also wouldn't just throw the word "actress" in your job title unless you plan to sell your skills as an actress. You just kind of tag that word on their out of nowhere. It is pretty confusing to clients to say "Marketer and actress," anyway, so it's usually advised to choose one or the other, but not both.

Good luck.
