It's a really bad idea to join Upwork looking to get experience. You should get experienced and skilled before joining the platform, otherwise you'll just end up spending a lot of money on connects trying to get your first, low-paying jobs. Not to mention that you risk being scammed by not knowing how to conduct yourself as a freelancer.

I'm fairly new to Upwork myself and I only had one assignment on Upwork so far. All I can do is echo what others freelancers say, keep sending out those proposals. It's really a numbers game. The people who have earned a lot of chedda on Upwork started out just like you and me, newbies trying to get their first gig. If you stay active on the boards and send out proposals, things will start happening.

As far as employers trying to talk to you outside of Upwork, don't do it. Don't give these people your info. There are a lot of scammers out there. If an "employer" comes on Upwork and breaks all the rules, they're not legit.
